What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is whether — and how — AI assistants name your business when a buyer asks them for a recommendation. It is the successor to search visibility, and it behaves very differently.

The results page became a paragraph

For two decades, being found meant appearing on a page of ten blue links. You could be third, or seventh, or on page two, and each position was worth something. Buyers scanned, compared, clicked around.

When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity the same question, they get a paragraph. It names three or four businesses, says a sentence about each, and often recommends one. The buyer rarely asks a follow-up. There is no page two, no position seven, no “also consider”. You are in the paragraph or you are not.

What visibility means in that world

Three things, in order of importance:

  1. Are you named at all? Across many realistic buyer questions, how often does the assistant include you? Visiqn calls this the mention rate.
  2. What does it say? A mention with a wrong price, wrong hours or a wrong description can be worse than no mention. Factual accuracy is part of visibility.
  3. Who does it name instead? Your competitors' mention rates tell you how far you are from being the default recommendation.

Why it is not the same as SEO

Assistants do use search under the hood, but the ranking of a page is only one input. What matters more is whether the assistant can build a confident, consistent picture of your business from everything it reads — your site, directories, press, reviews. A business with a perfect Google ranking and a thin, inconsistent web presence can be invisible to assistants. A business with mediocre rankings but crisp, structured, widely repeated facts about itself can be the default answer.

The practical consequences:

  • Keyword density matters much less. Clear statements of fact matter much more.
  • Consistency across sources matters. If three directories disagree about your hours, the assistant picks one — often the wrong one.
  • Being quotable matters. A page that directly answers a buyer's question in one clear paragraph is what an assistant reaches for.

How to measure it

Honestly: you cannot measure it with one question on one afternoon. Assistants vary between sessions and between model versions. A real measurement needs many questions, several assistants, clean sessions, and a record of what was said and cited so that the same measurement can be repeated later. That is what a Visiqn report is — and it is why the report ships with all 120 raw answers, so nothing has to be taken on trust.

What to do about it

Most improvements come from three kinds of work: correcting the sources assistants rely on, making your own website unambiguous and structured, and publishing pages that answer specific buyer questions. The AI-readiness checklist walks through the website part; fixing factual errors covers the sources.
